BritSpeech: British accent practice for iPhone

BritSpeech is an iPhone app for practising British pronunciation using Received Pronunciation (RP) as a reference. The official website is britspeech.com. You can explore free pronunciation guides, sound examples and a browser accent assessment before deciding whether the app suits your practice.

What can you practise with BritSpeech?

Use BritSpeech to listen to British sound examples, read aloud and work on pronunciation in short exercises. Its reference is RP. It is not a course covering every British regional accent, and learning RP is not a requirement for speaking good English.

A useful first goal is a sound in a sentence you need. For instance, compare R in ‘car park’ and ‘car engine’, then use those phrases in a short answer. The free guide library gives you exercises you can try before installing anything.

Listen once, repeat the word, then use it in a sentence. Practise the dropped r.

How should you use pronunciation feedback?

Treat feedback as help choosing your next practice task. Keep recordings you can compare yourself, and ask a listener what they understood when possible. A numerical result cannot capture every feature of your accent or predict every listener’s reaction.

Not every recording can be measured successfully. If an attempt has no score, it does not prove your pronunciation was poor. Check that the microphone captured your voice, try in a quieter place and compare the playback before repeating the exercise.

What is free, and where do you find subscription terms?

The website’s pronunciation guides, sound examples and browser assessment are free to access. The iPhone app has paid subscription options. Check the App Store and the in-app purchase screen for the current price, trial eligibility and renewal terms in your country.

Do not assume that an old screenshot or another person’s introductory offer applies to your account. The purchase screen is the place to confirm the offer available to you. This guide does not promise a particular discount or free-trial duration.

Is BritSpeech the same as BritSpeak?

No. This website and the iPhone app are BritSpeech. BritSpeak at britspeak.co is a separate British English coaching business. Searching for ‘Britspeak’, ‘British speak’ or ‘Brit speaks’ can lead to different services; check the name and website before you choose one.

Choose a first exercise before choosing a tool

Read the beginner guide if you are unsure where to start. Choose the sound library if you already know the feature you want to practise. If you want detailed help with a regional accent or feedback on a long conversation, consider a teacher who works with that goal.

Try one exercise, record it and decide whether the format helps you hear a useful difference. That is a better test of fit than expecting an app, a score or a recommendation to guarantee a particular accent.
